Pioneers, oh Pioneers
BELONG
In every movement that has ever brought change—whether it’s spiritual, cultural, or societal—there has always been a small group of people who saw something that didn’t yet exist and were willing to step into the unknown to help bring it to life. These are the Pioneers: the dreamers, builders, and risk-takers who go ahead of the crowd, forging new paths and blazing trails for others to follow.
At Uncommon City, we believe God is inviting us to step into this legacy. We are not building just another church; we are creating a community—a space where people pursue the Good, Beautiful, and True Way of Jesus. This requires a willingness to walk into uncharted territory, to build something different, and to imagine a church that feels less like tradition and more like a deep breath of hope.
The Pioneers are those who hear this call and say, “Yes, I’ll go first.”
“Come, my soul, be not timid or constrained. Step boldly forth.”
What It Means To Be A Pioneer
-
Nothing significant happens without prayer. Pioneers commit to praying for one another, for our city, and for the vision of Uncommon City. Prayer walks through neighborhoods, quiet moments of intercession, and collective times of worship anchor us in God’s power and guidance. Pioneers are spiritual trailblazers, holding space for the impossible to be made possible through the faithfulness of God.
-
Pioneers are the heartbeat of Uncommon City’s mission. Rooted in the pursuit of the Good, Beautiful, and True Way of Jesus, Pioneers actively cultivate spaces where community can flourish. This means advocating for those on the margins, building authentic relationships, and embodying a spirit of radical hospitality that reflects the love of Christ. It’s not about simply showing up for tasks or events; it’s about co-creating a culture of belonging, safety, and growth where everyone feels seen, valued, and invited into deeper connection.
-
To abide is to remain deeply rooted in Jesus, the source of true life (John 15v4). As Urban Abiders, Pioneers embody this life in their everyday rhythms, drawing nourishment from Jesus and allowing His presence to overflow into the life of our city. This means seeking beauty in the ordinary, pursuing justice for our neighbors, and creating opportunities for others to experience the abundance of abiding in Christ. Pioneers shape a culture that is alive, contemplative, and attuned to the unique needs of our urban context.
-
Pioneers embrace the unknown, knowing that forging a new path requires courage and faith. There is no blueprint for what we are building, but there is a deep trust in Jesus to lead the way. This means stepping out of comfort zones, experimenting with fresh ideas, and being willing to fail forward as we grow. Pioneers are marked by their faith, their adaptability, and their reliance on God’s provision as they help create a community that reflects His kingdom.
-
Pioneers are connectors, drawing others into the story God is writing through Uncommon City. Whether inviting someone into a small gathering, introducing neighbors to one another, or simply listening to the stories of those around them, Pioneers create pathways of connection. They build bridges between the church and the city, helping others experience the transformative hope found in Jesus. Advocacy and action go hand in hand as Pioneers create spaces of inclusion and opportunity.
-
A key part of being a Pioneer is showing up—for one another, for the community, and for the vision God has placed in our hearts. This doesn’t just mean attending events; it means being present in one another’s lives. Pioneers celebrate victories together, carry each other’s burdens, and offer practical help when needed. Whether it’s answering a call late at night, lending a hand during a tough time, or simply being there to listen, Pioneers model the commitment and care that make community sacred.
“Come, my soul, all the world lies before you.”
The Invitation To Pioneer
Being a Pioneer isn’t about perfection or having all the answers—it’s about a willingness to step into the unknown with open hands and open hearts. It’s about pursuing what is Good, Beautiful, and True, trusting that the path will reveal itself as we walk it together.
Come, my soul, be not timid or constrained. Step boldly forth. Like Whitman’s call to the brave, the young, and the faithful-hearted, this is an invitation to those who long for more—to cultivate a community where life flourishes and hope takes root in unexpected places.
Pioneers are dreamers and builders, not for their own gain but for the sake of those who have been overlooked or disconnected. Together, we are creating a space where the weary can rest, where the hurting can heal, and where justice and joy embrace. This is a church not bound by ritual but alive with radical love—a reflection of the Goodness of God, the Beauty of His creation, and the Truth of His promises.
To be a Pioneer is to join a story larger than yourself. It is to bring your whole self—your doubts, your gifts, your dreams—and offer them to something sacred. It is to carry the weight of the vision together, celebrating the triumphs and walking faithfully through the challenges.
So we ask: Will you come? Will you help lay a foundation for something that endures? Will you pioneer a way for others to encounter the Good, Beautiful, and True Way of Jesus? The invitation stands. The path is before us.
